Without suggesting we should be ruled by the calendar, the New Year presents a welcome opportunity to look at our lives and businesses and ponder whether it’s time for a change.
We’re all aware that visitors to our websites like to see something new. Our sites would get visited more often if they were updated regularly. We want lots of visitors because they spend money or because we want a big audience for our ideas. But we’re busy, and it’s hard to think of things to say, and it’s easy to put off that update until there’s more to be said…
I understand – I’m as guilty as anyone in this respect. But there are things we can do, and I’m cheekily going to propose them as your New Year resolutions:
- Make your website easy to update. Have your site made over with a Content Management System (CMS) so you can update it quickly, whenever you want.
- Get your visitors writing for you. User-generated content is what the hype around Web 2.0 is all about. Forums, blogs and other interactive pages help make your site more varied, interesting and relevant to your visitors.
- Draw on content from outside. Combine news from your industry with your own commentary to provide a unique source of up-to-date information and opinion, as on this very journal.
